The Importance of Creating Goals

I recently read an interesting article in Entrepreneur "Setting Goals in Strange Times".  It talked about how it is important to set goals even with the uncertainty of 2021 and what lies ahead.  I feel that no matter what the situation, if you are a very small organization or very large goal setting is very important.  It keeps you on track and allows you and your team members to make important business adjustments along the way.  Even at MCA Consulting we set weekly goals.  We have a staff meeting every Monday to discuss what we need to get accomplished whether it is client projects or organizational projects we set the goals and check in throughout the week on progress.  The article I read received feedback from six entrepreneurs on how they were setting their goals, and this is what they suggested:

1. Track Your Progress – many of them set yearly goals and quarterly goals as well as weekly goals.  The weekly goals help them adapt strategies or plans to change business conditions as well as get the team on the same page in case objectives should change
2. Prepare to Fail – Always have a plan B (and C and D and E)
3. Work Smarter – we need to achieve our goals with greater efficiency and profitability
4. Get Granular – break down the goals in different chunks whether it is by geography, region, or account type.  By logically building up from a granular level, forecasting is rooted in as an accurate process as possible
5. Be Aggressive – 2020 was spent improving workflows and processes, investing in back end, and increasing operational excellence, as well as optimizing infrastructure. 2021 is the year to push ahead, by committing to sustainability, innovation, and products by setting aggressive goals.
6. Know your Strengths – focus on efforts and goals on regions we are located in
